OUR TEAM

The idea behind M Kami was simple: Melbourne had salons that washed scalps. It did not have a location that treated them the way Tokyo did — with attention, with time, and with a technique that takes years to develop

The Beginning

A practice carried from Tokyo.

M Kami opened in Melbourne in 2024, founded by practitioners who had studied and worked in Japan. The name — kami (髪) — means hair in Japanese. The practice it names is older than the brand: a discipline of scalp diagnosis, patient cleansing, and slow, firm massage that has been carried unchanged from Tokyo for decades.

The idea behind M Kami was simple: Melbourne had salons that washed scalps. It did not have a location that treated them the way Tokyo did — with attention, with time, and with a technique that takes years to develop. The locations in Docklands, Deepdene, and Little Collins were built to close that gap.

Training and Technique

Rooted in the Japanese tradition.

The Japanese head spa emerged as a discipline distinct from both hairdressing and Western spa. It centres on the scalp as an organ: one that responds to pressure, temperature, and product chemistry in ways that directly affect hair health, blood flow, and the nervous system's resting state.

Each M Kami practitioner trained directly in Japanese head spa technique — studying the pressure sequence, the cleansing rhythm, and the diagnostic eye that precedes every treatment. That training is not abbreviated or adapted for a local market. The method is applied in Melbourne exactly as it would be in Tokyo.

The Philosophy

A treatment is not a haircut. It is a return.

The Japanese head spa is a discipline, not an indulgence. It begins with a scalp diagnosis under warm light, moves through a patient cleansing in still water, and centres on a slow, firm massage drawn from techniques that have been carried unchanged from Tokyo.

Most guests arrive expecting something like a Western salon scalp wash. They leave understanding the difference. The work done across seventy or ninety minutes is closer to bodywork than beauty — restorative, exact, and made in the room with you.

As someone who's had head spa treatments in Tokyo, this is the closest I've found in Australia. The technique is right. The space is right. I rebook before I leave.

I have never relaxed so deeply in my life. The diagnosis at the start surprised me — they actually examined my scalp before deciding what to do. Worth every dollar.

Took my mother for her birthday. We both came out so calm we couldn't speak for ten minutes in the car. Already booking her again for Christmas.
